About the Lecture
The lecture will delve into Ġużè Ellul Mercer's Leli ta' Ħaż-Żgħir (Shadows of the Truth, tr. Godwin Ellul) as a novel whose plot essentially revolves around a central philosophical episode, as exemplified by Platos' Allegory of the Cave, making the novel a text about reading, knowledge, and books. Vella will be going through the different readings, re-readings and potential misreadings of the novel which, as a mainstay of the Maltese canon and a text studied by generations of students, still has the power to elicit questions about its interpretation and its actual function in Maltese culture. The lecture will be in English and open to residents of foreign nationality.
